'It's All About Color'

July 28-30, 2017

Freeform Expression with Acrylic Paint

Let go of preconceptions and push past your artistic road blocks!
In this 3 day retreat you will be guided through an exploration of color, texture and form and experiment
with freeform expression to create colorful acrylic paintings with meaning and balance.

Each day includes coffee, mid-morning snack, buffet of soup and salads for lunch, wine and hors d'oeuvres
Saturday night also includes a full course dinner

Day 1:

It's All in the Background

Play with color and learn how to create depth and movement with acrylic paints. It all begins with rich, intriguing backgrounds:

On the first morning of the retreat we will begin with a hands-on approach to the key elements of color theory and explore what makes color palettes work and why some are boring or flat. Most importantly we will learn methods of how to fix the color palettes that don’t work. We will create our own elementary color wheels while learning how to mix paints to get saturated colors as well as complex neutrals. In addition, we will play with the color wheels and templates in EYE FOR COLOR to enhance our color palettes and explore exciting new combinations.

In the afternoon we will start creating the colorful backgrounds that will become the foundation for the paintings over the next two days.

You may choose to also add collage elements to further enhance the texture in your backgrounds.

Friday includes Coffee Bar, Lunch, Wine and Hors d'oeuvres

Day 2:

Using 1 of the colorful backgrounds created on the first day, we will explore negative space to pull out abstract poppies, then add layers of fluid acrylics to enhance the shapes. Finally we will add touches of color to give the palette depth and interest!

Saturday includes Coffee Bar, Lunch, Wine and Hors d'oeuvres, Dinner

Day 3:

Landscape Wash... or Pure Abstract

Using another of the colorful backgrounds created on the first day, we will wash layers of fluid acrylics to create landscapes with depth and movement. Leave as is and create a pure abstract painting, or add details such as a tree, a figure, hills or water for an impressionistic landscape.

Sunday includes Coffee Bar, Lunch, Wine and Hors d'oeuvres

Your kind words from past retreats warm my heart...

“All we can say is, thank you, thank you, thank you! It was an amazing week of wonderful instruction, fabulous food, perfect location, lots of laughs ... what more could anyone have possibly wished for? I pity all those who could not attend; they missed a wonderful time with you.” - Leigh Steiner & Jan Scully

“I just wanted to thank you for being such a gracious host and fabulous teacher. Your beach home is lovely, the food was yummy, and the classes inspiring. I so enjoyed being there!” - Marlene Brannen

“I just want to drop you a line and tell you how much I enjoyed your Autumn Retreat, such a special time to be around so many creative people. I have your classroom photo up on my screen saver, so I get to relive this fun time a number of times during the day and have told my girlfriends all about each project and the wonderful healthy menu that you served each day.

The time that you gave me is entered in my Journal of Life Time Memories.” – Barbara Jo
