We continued our study of 'Value' - one of the basic Elements of Design. As we learned in the last lesson,
value (shading) enables us to depict 3
dimensional objects such as spheres. And in fact many objects around us
are just variations of a sphere. I brought apples and pears into class
and we used the
same techniques to draw them with charcoal as we did with the 3-D shapes .
Some of the lessons we learned last time were refined this week, such
as using 'whisper lines' to sketch in the outline and blending the
charcoal in a circular pattern with our fingers to create soft value
changes and erase charcoal lines. Also, the kneaded eraser was used
to not only 'lift' off charcoal but also helped to blend in the pencil
lines. Finally, the students 'placed' the fruit onto a table and added
cast shadows.
As
an added challenge, some students drew bell peppers. The lobes, curves
and slight variations in value were difficult to capture, however the
results were amazing!
